About Computer Science for Appalachia
The CSA Design
The Computer Science for Appalachia project builds on previous partnerships that include elementary mathematics, family workshops centered on CS and mathematics learning, family STEM nights in local schools, and community data art learning events. Through collaborative planning and design processes, CSA learning cycles were designed to integrate computer science and computational thinking with Appalachian literacy practices of storytelling to engage educators in culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP). In this way, the project’s current priorities are to develop rigorous CS content, highlight student voices and agency through integrated CS learning opportunities, and leverage family assets and community cultural knowledge (Kapor Center, 2021).
